Village Co-operative

Village Co-operative sewing machines

Following consultation with the village women, a sewing co-operative was established. 10 sewing machines were acquired. Training was provided by a local tailor. School uniforms are now produced by the co-operative. These are sold to the charity and then handed to the sponsored schoolchildren. The profits are shared by the co-operative providing the village women with an income, which they have never previously benefited from. In recent months as a result of the excellent quality of the uniforms the co-operative has been asked to supply all the school uniforms for one of the local schools. This means they will be manufacturing not only for the Sanwia sponsored children but for all the pupils attending the school. For children not residing in Sankwia the uniforms are sold to the school who sell them on to the parents of the children involved.

New skills have been learnt and the members are proud of their achievements as well as providing money for their families. The co-operative has developed as clothing is now manufactured for sale in the local markets and a tie and dye workshop has been formed.

The co-operative is run by an elected committee.
